Elton Johnappeared as a cartoon character of himself on the Valentine's Day episode "I'm With Cupid". The show ended with Elton playing a Valentine's Day serenade of Your Song to Apu and his wife Manjula.
Elton's cartoon character was shown coming off a plane that was "wearing" his trademark '70s style glasses. In a parody of Tantrums & Tiaras, Elton had to land in Springfield because he was unhappy that the chandelier in the dining room in his jet didn't meet his approval.

The 1999 solo tourbook is about 9x12 inches. The cover is black with gold and white type. A quote from Elton John fills up basically the entire cover: "After you've had a career for thirty years, you need to go back and be scared once in a while. With a band you're surrounded by people who can support and cover up for you. It's very rewarding to do shows on your own -- it gives you a chance to talk to the audience."Under the quote (which is in gold type) it says (in white type) An Evening With Elton John Solo.Inside the booklet, the page backgrounds are mostly gold and black. There are various older photos of Elton and Elton and Bernie, etc, some with type superimposed on them. These older photos are basically black and white, but they have a gold-shine to them, too. The text describes Elton's accomplishments over this decade, including The Lion King stuff, Candle in the Wind '97, etc. There are some recent color portraits of Elton, too, one really neat one where he is standing on a leopard-print piano with leopard statues in front of him, and various fruits painted on the walls and ceilings. There is another color photo that seems a bit older, where he wears a red suit and black hat and cane, and appears to be standing in an alley below a sign that says "One Night Only, Elton John" next to a motorcycle. The center fold photo is of Elton lounging on a couch wearing a silky-looking, purple-patterned suit and a pink feather boa, with a bird perched on his hand.
Next, is a big red-background page with gold type that begins a section on Aida. There is a story and various photos of Elton with Sting, LeAnn Rimes, Janet Jackson, Shania Twain, etc. Then, there is a full-page ad from Disney on Broadway congratulating Elton. Next is a story on Bernie Taupin, including a full-color, recent photo of Bernie. Next, is a double-spread Versace Jeans Coutour ad, then an ad from Warner Brothers that has a globe with a red ribbon tied around it and a card that says "Elton"; the text of the ad reads "all yours, with love from all your friends at Warner Brothers." Then is a page of credits and thank-yous. Next a two-page ad spread for Aida. On the front and back flaps is a half photo of Elton in the same "black-and-white-gold" color as the older photos in the booklet. If you put the flaps together, it makes a whole picture. The back cover is a photo of Elton sitting at a dressing room mirror with lights. He has his hands up the air with an "Oh, what shall I do!" look on his face.

US CONCERT - Hard Rock Live, Orlando FL
The world's biggest Hard Rock Cafe at Universal Studios' City Walk - a themed restaurant facility that showcases 11 different restaurants - will house new and recycled rock memorabilia from the original Universal Hard Rock Cafe. It will include a 2,500 seat concert hall, built to "resemble the Roman Colosseum after a collision with a 1958 Cadillac car."
Elton John performed for an audience of 2,000 at the grand opening, which is sold out at $150 per ticket. The show was a benefit the Give Kids The World ($1 million was raised) and Elton John AIDS Foundation ($150,000, Elton's fee for the evening, was raised) charities.
"The Elton John AIDS Foundation has had a long-standing relationship with the Hard Rock Cafe, so I am delighted to have been here to celebrate the opening of Hard Rock Live in Orlando," said Elton John. "I'm in the midst of my first ever completely solo tour so this was the perfect venue for this type of performance. I am also very grateful to the Hard Rock family for continuing to support the work of the Elton John AIDS Foundation. We sincerely appreciate the money that was raised tonight, which enables us to continue our work in the fight against AIDS.

US AWARD PRESENTATION - Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Induction, Waldof Astoria Hotel New York City NY
Elton John gave the induction speech for Dusty Springfield as she was granted admittance to the Hall Of Fame. Dusty Springfield died on March 2 1999.
In an interview published at the announcement, Elton John said, "I volunteered because I loved her so much." Elton said she'd been the first performer he had ever idolised. "Hers was the first fan club I belonged to. I had pictures of Dusty all over my walls," he said. When he learnt of her death, Sir Elton sang one of Springfield's hits, I Only Want to Be With You, on March 2nd to an audience in Peoria, Illinois, as a tribute. "Dusty, wherever you are, this one's for you, my love, with all my love," he said.
At the ceremony, Elton calls Dusty ""the greatest white female singer that has ever lived... besides Tiffany," and adds, "I love you Dusty. You are enough to turn a gay boy straight... well not really!"
Elton did not perform during the traditional jam session.

Of the Aida album Elton [said] "I just told people, 'Don't do the songs the same as me.' And no one has. Sting has done Another Pyramid in a very, very classic reggae way. James Taylor's done How I Know You in a very beautiful James Taylor acoustic fashion. And the Spice Girls have recorded My Strongest Suit. They're really the only people who could have done it."

Elton John won two awards for song-writing at the 47th Annual BMI Pop Awards. He won for both Candle in the Wind 97and Something About the Way You Look Tonight.

Candle in the Wind Score Sold To Diana's Brother
LONDON (Reuters) - Princess Diana's brother Friday bought the original score to the tribute song Candle in the Wind '97, which Elton John sang at the princess' funeral and which became the best-selling single ever.
Earl Charles Spencer paid $40,540 at an auction in Sotheby's for the instrumental score which was penned in minutes by pop legend Sir George Martin.
The song became a best-selling single after Elton John sang it at the princess' funeral.
The hand-notated score will now become part of the Diana legacy in the museum dedicated to her life at the Spencer family's rural estate, where the princess is buried.
But a platinum disc marking the song's record 33 million sales failed to command an acceptable bid at the auction and will now return to Martin.
"(The score) was bought by Shelley-Anne Claircourt, spokesperson for the Diana museum. After the sale, she announced it would be on view at Althorp from July," a spokeswoman for Sotheby's told Reuters.
Althorp is the Spencer family's rural estate, where Princess Diana grew up. She is buried on an island in an ornamental lake.
Elton John's performance of Candle in the Wind was the emotional centerpiece of the princess' funeral in September 1997. She was killed in a high speed car crash with her companion Dodi Al Fayed in Paris in August.
Martin rose to fame producing most of the Beatles albums, and became known as the fifth Beatle.
"It was the fastest bit of writing I have ever done," he said recently of the Diana tribute which was completed in just an afternoon's work.
"We met in the studio at 1 p.m. knowing we had to work fast. I had no preconceived ideas about the arrangement so I took the precaution of booking a string quartet and a couple of woodwind for the late afternoon. I set about hastily writing a score for the musicians who were arriving."
Elton John and his lyricist Bernie Taupin originally wrote the song as a tribute to Marilyn Monroe. It was a hit in 1974.
After the death of the Princess of Wales in 1997 it was reworked by lyricist Bernie Taupin as a tribute to be played at the funeral. It was then recorded and became a sales phenomenon.
A second North American leg of Elton John's solo tour moves to cover some cities in the Northwest United States. He mentions Seattle and Boise in particular during a radio interview in early March. 17 shows in the month between May 21 (Bakersfield California) and June 19 (Providence RI).

Elton soars while flying solo

Seattle Times staff reporter- "Here we are with just the piano and me," remarked a coy Elton John after the start of his sold-out performance last night at KeyArena. The ever-flamboyant pop legend tried a hand at minimalism for this latest solo show, during which he performed nearly 30 songs accompanied only by his Yamaha grand.
- Clad in a purple plaid suit with rhinestone trim, the 52-year-old singer sported a full head of fluffy brown hair and a dangly diamond skull-and-crossbones earring as he rolled through a historical tour of his immense song book. With a set list that could provide the curriculum for Elton John 101, he pounded out the crowd pleasers, prefaced songs with brief explanations of their personal meanings and remained largely faithful to his chronology, starting with Your Song and ending the 2 1/2-hour set with more recent hits.
- ... John's piano playing was characteristically mood-driving, as it careened through jazz, honky tonk and self-stylized classical. However, it became quickly apparent that his voice has mellowed naturally with age. He no longer shoots ambitiously for the falsetto highs, and his range has deepened, frosted with a slight huskiness.
- John's ecstatic mood matched that of the mature crowd, which clapped and wiggled along enthusiastically, although not always in rhythm.
- John's 30-year career has made him a gracious performer; after nearly every song, he would bow and show his appreciation 360 degrees in order not to miss a single section of the audience that surrounded him. At one point, he broke the show for five minutes as he autographed nearly every surface the crowd at the front thrust at him.
- John's solo appearance was a smooth, feel-good production, an unobstructed venue for his talents as songwriter and performer, and an admirable retrospective of his career. You're getting fair warning, though: The live concert CD will be in stores (probably around the holidays) before you know it.

What's wrong with this word picture?
Subdued is not what we've come to expect from the flamboyant pop-rocker whose feathered headgear and sequined jackets were often reminiscent of road company rejects from La Cage aux Folles.- If at times it seemed that the former crocodile rocker's new stylistic approach was a bit toothless, there were other moments in the two-plus hour solo performance when the reflective treatment paid big dividends.
- A case in point was Talking Old Soldiers, an introspective, almost somber look at the twilight years that resonated long after the houselights came up.
- Ticking, a little-heard tune from John's Caribou album, offered a prescient view of troubled youth and the stinging aftereffects of hair-trigger violence. Sadly, as the singer noted, it couldn't be more relevant today than when it was written in the mid-70s.
- Rocket Man blazed with an extended, bluesy piano improvisation, though the song was marred by some extraneous audio production effects.
- Note to Elton: Maybe next time out, you could bring back a sequin or two for old time's sake.

- That [cancelling a tour with Tina Turner] left John, perhaps the true king of pop, to go it alone this summer with "An Evening With" concert that came to a crowded Riverport Amphitheatre Saturday night. "This is a different kind of show. It's just me and this 9-foot black thing in front of me," John said near the top of the show, referring to his piano and the fact that the concert was without additional singers or musicians.
- John, dressed in a lime green suit peppered with sequins, gave his Yamaha grand piano a fierce workout during a 2 1/2-hour-plus show that respectfully balanced obscure songs like The Greatest Discovery, Skyline Pigeon and Talking Old Soldiers with expected fan favorites like Rocket Man, Honky Cat and I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues. Your Song opened the concert, while another song, Blessed, was his most requested, he said.
- John is a pure master at the piano, and there was no mistaking that as he dazzled the ivories with his prowess, especially on the more upbeat songs. Still, no matter how fascinating John's punchy playing could be at times, watching someone playing the piano for this long can carry some redundancy if the song selection isn't impeccable. And there was something to be said for the over-the-top extravaganzas John used to be known for. But this is a different time, and this is where John is at this point in his career.

By Ed Masley, Post-Gazette Pop Music Critic- Somehow, it all seemed so natural -- Elton John, a piano, the stage of the Coca-Cola Star Lake Amphitheatre otherwise free of musicianly interference.
- He didn't appear to be suffering any from lack of accompaniment. And neither, to his credit, did the songs.
- The understated backing lent a poignancy to the ballads, of which there were many, while on tunes like Honky Cat he proved beyond the shadow of a doubt that you don't need a drummer to pound out a rock 'n' roll beat.
- The playing was rarely, if ever, anything less than inspired, and as such, inspiring -- proof with every flourish that John remains the greatest rock 'n' roll piano man of his or any generation.
- If Rocket Man seemed lost in orbit by the time he gave new meaning to the line, "I think it's gonna be long, long time," it proved the only tune that may have been better left unstretched.
- His later hits, in particular, seemed to benefit from the lack of slick accompaniment. Without all the '80s production, I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues could have passed for an outtake from Honky Chateau, especially when he rocked it at the end.

Contributing Writer- It was never about Elton John's glasses or his silly costumes. It was more, much more that spoke to me, inspired me and launched me on the road to fanaticism.
- It was during my first Elton John concert at Merriweather Post Pavilion 10 years ago that I began my true pilgrimage to the land of fanaticism. Everything finally came together -- my love of classic pop, my love of the piano. I saw with my own eyes the talent, charisma and charm Elton possessed and shared with the audience. Call it envy, admiration or vicarious living. Call it what you will. But I called it wondrous.
- I was transformed. He was the most self-assured piano player I'd ever seen. He was commanding, inventive and spectacular. I was floored. He was everything I thought he'd be. After the show ended, I found myself desperate to keep discussing details of the evening. And from that day on, I would migrate to his name in record-store racks as I built up a full collection of his catalog of CDs.
- From attending fan-club gatherings around the country to planning vacations around publicity appearances of Elton's, I've done it all, fanatically speaking. I've even returned to piano lessons, with a teacher who understands the need I wish to satisfy -- to play Elton tunes. And when Elton appears at the arena tonight for a solo piano performance, I'll be there, too.
Oh, and I'll also be following him to a concert in Providence, R.I., the next day.

News that Elton John has left hospital in London after surgery to be fitted with a heart pacemaker. The operation was on July 9 and he left Wellington Hospital on Saturday afternoon. Outside the hospital he told reporters:
"It came as a bit of a shock but the operation was a simple procedure, the only thing I really regret is cancelling the shows this weekend and letting so many people down."
"Thank God for the British medical system because I went through every test known to man to find out exactly what was wrong. Initially I thought I had sunstroke."
"I was on the plane to David [Beckham] and Victoria's ['Posh Spice' Adams] wedding but I was ill and had to have some tests. I was given the all-clear and went back to France. All it means is that I will get extra special treatment at airports."
"I have spoken to the Beckhams and said that I couldn't play but they understood perfectly and I'll make it up to them sometime."
"I will resume a normal lifestyle after a couple of months rest. Life will get back to normal."
He said the support from fans had been "brilliant" and he thanked the media for their support.
Sir Elton described the operation in which his pacemaker was fitted: "I was unconscious for an hour-and-a-half and woke up for the end of the operation."

The three Leeds Castle shows are cancelled due to Elton's ear infection (as his ailment is was known at the time of the cancellation). In announcing the postponments, Elton said, "I am very disappointed that I have had to unavoidably reschedule these dates. I really don't think I could give my full 100% at the moment, which is what the fans deserve."
A replacement concert is held on September 4 1999.

Elton John revealed in an exclusive to the London Daily Mirror how John Reid had cost him £20 million with a series of "treacherous" business deals.
In the Mirror article Elton said the following:
- "As far as I'm concerned, John Reid's a liar and a cheat."
- "I'm not broke, I'm not going broke, I've never been going broke."
Elton said Reid had sold the rights to his first six albums for £3 million, and he had even secretly re-mortgaged his £4 million home in Windsor.
Elton said: "The treachery and betrayal of a man I counted on as a friend and confidant has caused me 18 months of heartbreak. That is the truth. I figured out something was wrong so I asked my lawyer, Frank Presland, who's been with me for 18 years, to take a look at my finances. It was the first time I'd asked for an audit in all those years. I didn't know how much money I had. And what did we find? The biggest mess you can imagine. There were literally dozens of horrendous deals. It was a total mess and very alarming. I estimate £20 million had gone. I found he'd sold the rights to the first six albums for just £3 million - a lot less than they were worth."
Among the astonishing discoveries made by a team of auditors was that Elton had made a £12,000 loss on a sellout 44-date US tour in 1980 while his manager had made nearly £600,000. Aides insisted yesterday that estimates that Elton was worth £160 million were "very conservative."
His borrowings are tiny compared to his income - less than ten per cent of his total assets - and he earns around £40 million a year.
On the topic of spending money, Elton said: "The truth is, I do spend a lot of money. I don't deny that. It's rubbish to suggest that I spend more than I earn although, that said, I do spend a lot. I believe in living while you're living. I've got nobody to leave it to, but my partner, David Furnish, my family and my employees."

Geoff Shackelford sent in this excerpt from the April 30 1999 issue of Variety:
...that the film will be released on August 20th, and that it was Sharon Stone (who stars in the movie) who got Elton involved in the project.
Speaking about Elton and the score, the film's director and writer Albert Brooks said: "This is really something new. I think I was a good fit for him, because, having gotten to know him, I said, 'I could never see you doing 95 minutes of music showing Steven Seagal being afraid.' But to write a cue that brings me from the car to the living room, that's something he's just not really done. My temp score, which accompanied the print that Elton initially saw, had stuff like Vivaldi and Brahms, various classical things. And it was sort of 'Eltonized.' He made it his own but to me it has more of a timeless feel to it."
Brooks also said: "The score is very string-based. But there are a few passages where it's just him playing piano, and it's really pretty. Elton's got these melodies in his head that are very much his own."

Shooting began March 14 1999 for this Coky Giedroyc movie starring Helena Bonham Carter. The film is produced by Rocket Pictures and Jean Doumanian. - International pop superstar Elton John dazzled and charmed more than 7,300 loving fans in a historic Tuesday night concert at the Asheville Civic Center.
- Dressed in a bright blue suit with silver braids and wearing orange glasses and a single earring, John was greeted with thunderous applause when he strolled on stage about 7:40 p.m. "Hello Asheville - I've never been here before. It's a beautiful place," he told the capacity Civic Center crowd.
- The turnout was mostly middle aged and older, although a few younger fans were spotted in the packed arena. One woman waved a small English flag from the balcony.
- The event was the biggest concert in Asheville since Elvis played three shows at the Civic Center in 1975. John's show had been officially sold out for weeks, although a handful of last-minute tickets went on sale Monday and were gone in an instant.

US BROADWAY - AIDA Sales Preview, New Amsterdam Theatre
A promotional event for the group sales for the Broadway run of Aida. There were two previews (5pm and 7pm), Elton John was at the second one. Disney presidents Thomas Schumacher and Peter Schneider, Robert Falls, Bob Crowley and Wayne Cliento were there to make presentations.
Performances were by Heather Headley, Adam Pascal, Sherie Scott and a chorus that performed to a choreographed medley.

- Just as Bruce Springsteen did in August, Elton John managed to transform the FleetCenter into his own personal house of worship. Last night the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famer gave a marathon two-hour, 45-minute performance that had the capacity crowd rising again and again with resounding ovations.
- They were well-deserved not only for the beloved piano man's endurance but also his energetic presentation and supple and emotionally impassioned vocals.
- It was on this song [Harmony] that it became apparent that at 52, Sir Elton has pretty much given up on reaching for any of the high notes that were once one of his distinguishing vocal traits. It was a slight disappointment but on most tunes John worked well around this limitation.

The New York Post's published a review by Dan Aquilante under the headline ELTON'S CHEAP THRILLS FALL FLAT. Here are some (lots of?) excerpts:
- The flamboyant days of Sir Elton John - the gap-toothed Brit piano man - may not be over, but as his latest Madison Square Garden appearance shows, he's learning to live more simply.
- The no-frills event mostly highlighted the man's greatest hits - and would have given nearly any keyboard ace serious pianist's envy. But the program itself was slow-paced and ballad-filled.
- [Your Song] a tune that thrilled the decidedly older crowd in the nearly sold-out house.
- Like the night's staging and musical arrangements, John dressed simply, in basic black, albeit stitched with a splash of silver spangle on the shoulder and jacket pocket.
- It [a solo concert] was a daring step - and ultimately unsuccessful. With John, to keep things interesting requires a fatter sound, with guitars and drumming. The mid-tempo ballads, such as Daniel, and one of his first, written with longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin, Skyline Pigeon, were pretty, but elicited lots of yawns.
- The biggest hit of the early, slow-death-by-ballads show, was a rollicking version of Honky Cat. Yet even in that piece, John's excellent piano noodlings didn't unglue the fans from their seats.
- To keep things visually interesting - a hard task when you consider John is chained to the piano - the video boys superimposed EJ's kisser over a spacescape during Rocketman [sic]. On that video, a giant Elton dodged moons and the rings of Saturn as he whizzed through the video space scene while playing the tune.
- In spite of being in good, clear voice, John insisted on pushing his pipes through a number of effects - including echo machines and filters to fatten his sound.
- Of the few fast-paced numbers, Philadelphia Freedom was one of the evening's best. He played it with a funk piano and featured an excellent extended solo. That was also true for the evening's other highlights, I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues, and the well known anthem, Crocodile Rock.
- In all, this was the kind of show that didn't belong at Madison Square Garden. It needed the intimacy of a small house, say the Beacon, or even the Hammerstein.
The New York Daily News published a review by Jim Farber, under the headline: "The Best of Elton John". Here are some excerpts:
- Elton John seems to breeze through most of his area shows on automatic pilot. Finally, at the Garden on Friday, Elton veered off his usual flight plan.
- Not since a stint at the Palladium in 1979 has Elton played this way [alone at the piano] in the city. Even then he buttressed himself with another player: the florid percussionist Ray Cooper. Elton did allow himself a small cheat here. He bolstered his chunky acoustic piano chords with an elegant underlay of synthesizer. But that proved a tiny net for this three-hour, 29-song high-wire act.
- But the topper was '74's Ticking, which features one of Bernie Taupin's most well-plotted lyrics.
- In Take Me To The Pilot he jammed extensively, drawing on everything from boogie-woogie to show tunes.
- The last song was just one of four rockers in the show. But the pace never dragged. That wasn't only because of the enduring beauty of Elton's tunes but because he dared something: to find a new way into songs everyone knows by heart.

The Daily Oklahoman newspaper published a review of the show by Sandi Davis. Some excerpts:
- Headline: Elton John: no tricks, pure Halloween treat
- With only his rock-solid voice and piano playing, John wowed a crowd made up mostly of baby boomers who sang the words they knew and gave the English rocker standing ovations after each song.
- Though John is famous for his costumes, for this Medusa tour he dressed in a solid black leather suit with the tour name emblazoned across the back. His only hints of color were his red glasses and reddish-brown hair.
- The concert was a grab bag of music. He would mix a hit like Burn Down the Mission with less well-known songs, giving the crowd a crash course in all things John.
- Though this is the fourth decade -- nearly the fifth -- that John has been a part of the music scene, his voice and piano prowess show no signs of flagging, and this Medusa show just made me excited about what he will try next. Though there are songs on my private request list that John did not do, (Friends, I'm Still Standing) I think I, along with the audience, left well-satisfied with the treats John brought on stage.

On her October 13 show, Rosie said this was the most difficult song for her because after Elton recorded his part, she realized that he sang it very slowly, and she had a hard time holding the notes as long as he did.

- Crescent fresh is a perfect way to describe Elton John's concert Wednesday night in Omaha. It was the kind of jaw-dropping performance that was so good you had to pinch yourself to make sure it was still Omaha, and it still was the Civic Auditorium Arena.
- Yep. And it was still John, who played for nearly three hours on what had to be one of the simplest stage sets ever assembled at the arena. It was as if the 52-year-old pop star was playing his first gig.
- "Tonight, it's just me and the piano," John informed the sellout audience of 10,079. He was exceptionally relaxed and gregarious - motioning to the crowd between each song as he took sips from a Diet Coke resting in an ice bucket near the singer's black Yamaha grand piano. And how about that piano? It might have been the only instrument onstage, but John drew a full-bodied sound out of it that had the aural girth of a 60-piece orchestra.
- Dressed in a modest - for John - fire-engine red suit, the Grammy Award-winning artist delivered hit after hit.
- The jazzed crowd gave John several well-deserved standing ovations. John's piano playing - backed by an occasional pre-recorded synthesizer track - was inspiring. His vocals delivered as well.

- Headline: Review: Elton John concert low on charisma
- Few music stars could pull off a solo concert in an arena. Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton and Joni Mitchell have the repertoire but not the personality. Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young have the material and the personality but too much integrity. Billy Joel and Elton John have the necessary ingredients and the ego to do it, but Joel retired from the arena circuit earlier this year. So that leaves Elton. His solo concert Saturday at sold-out Target Center was a lot like his career -- unpredictable and spotty but occasionally delightful, always interesting and ultimately crowd-pleasing.
- First of all, Elton snuck a synthesizer into his grand piano -- or at least into the sound system. From time to time, there were synthesized strings to fill out the sound and some technical effects to "double" his vocals, making it sound as if he were singing harmony with himself. So, to purists, this didn't feel like a completely solo concert.
- Moreover, the 52-year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Famer didn't take advantage of the format. There was precious little spontaneity during his nearly three-hour performance, and he didn't talk much. The once-gregarious entertainer seemed rather low-energy and somber, limiting his comments to such canned things as "This song is from Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and I don't do it very much."
- This kind of setting is ideal for a performer to turn into a conversationalist with his audience, much the way Joel did earlier this year at Target Center. In other words, there wasn't much of Elton's personality in his show, which was surprising since he's been one of rock's most colorful and charismatic characters for 29 years. (There was much more personality at Elton's 1979 solo show, accompanied by a percussionist, at Northrop Auditorium.) Saturday's concert felt a bit like a recital.
- ... Elton is only the piano player -- someone else wrote the lyrics -- so he occasionally took off on instrumental excursions, which provided many of the most rewarding moments in the concert.
- Although the crowd of more than 18,000 responded enthusiastically to the opening chords of such hits as Levon and Daniel, it was the less familiar tunes that kept the program interesting. Better Off Dead added drama, Elton's Song added innocence, and Ticking (about youth violence) added tension and relevance. Too bad Elton didn't add more of his personality and ego.

- Capsule: A grand night for Elton John fans -- just the rocket man and his piano make for an evening of unforgettable songs performed in a less-than-cozy setting.
- Watching musical superstar Elton John in action with only his black grand piano and some synthesizer effects to back him up was a beautiful event. But there was one huge drawback to the whole experience -- the venue.
- For huge bombastic rock shows, an arena is a fine setting sometimes, and even for some mellow artists the place can be tolerated. Elton John, on the other hand, is an artist who demands intimacy, and his strong, emotional songs deserve nothing but an atmosphere that cradles, not rejects. Of course, putting John in a small venue is only part of a music lover's dream -- a sleepy wish that is only granted in wild imaginations.
- Dressed in a flashy black suit, dribbled with lots of sparkles, dangling earring, and dark glasses, John seemed to have his heart in things.
- Although three hours without an intermission was a bit more than the sometimes chatty crowd might have liked, it suited John well. The more the show went on, the better things got.
- Overall, it was a good night of unforgettable songs by one of pop music's greatest living performers in a place large enough to hold all his fans.

- Captain Fantastic without the fantastic bombast. Bennie minus the jet-powered sets. The onetime Madman has crossed over the waters of iconography. Now it's just Elton John straight (so to speak), not chasing after all the glitzy trappings of his '70s rock-star heyday.
- That's what The Medusa Tour offers fans: EJ stripped of all artifice. Before an era of wretched excess, there was just Reginald Dwight and his piano, singing his heart out.
- Though he can't hit the high notes of his youth, he works around his limits by singing in lower keys and registers. Like an aging divo, he skillfully negotiated the tricky intervals of Sweet Painted Lady. And what songs like Harmony lose in vocal intensity, they gain in poignance.
- This concert format also allows him to showcase his exquisite pianism.
- Playing more than 2 1/2 hours without a break, except for an instrumental interlude and sips from his ever-present Diet Coke, Elton reminded fans what becomes a legend most: total and absolute showmanship.

- Take away Elton John's excesses -- the outlandish costumes, the drugs, the syrupy orchestrations, the jewelry -- take away his band, take away even his youth, and what remains? John's daring, marathon solo piano performance at the Arie Crown Theatre on Tuesday night provided an unexpected answer. He presented himself not as master pop craftsman or king of soft-rock schmaltz, but as a serious artist with a 30-years-in-the-making body of work that can't be measured merely in terms of his abundant, instantly recognizable hits.
- Aside from the rhinestone trim on his powder-blue suit, John was an understated presence, and the music matched his wardrobe.
- His voice was a bit frayed, but it remained full and forceful, particularly as John's deliberate phrasing imbued his finale, Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me, with stately grandeur.
- Ticking, was his most audacious moment, and one of his finest, as John tersely sang a prophetic tale of violent, alienated youth from 1974. It was about the farthest imaginable point in John's songbook from Lion King ballads and Princess Diana elegies.
- As admirable as these intentions were, the subdued presentation dragged at times. No decent soul could begrudge John his sober dignity, but at times one pined for the outrageous rock 'n' roller of his younger, more turbulent days.
- Fortunately, John managed to balance maturity and mischief by frequently returning to his roots in the African-American music he first performed backing R&B musicians in the mid-'60s.
- John finished Bennie and the Jets with a rambunctious blast of barrelhouse boogie, mugging, bobbing his head, thrusting his pelvis into the underside of his instrument. It was a moment of unrestrained exhilaration at show's end, and no one could say he hadn't earned it.

Elton John's disatisfaction with the venue seemed to revolve around the size of the auditorium (large for a 4,300 seater) and the distance between himself and the audience. For the remaining two shows, the orchestra pit seating was removed thus moving the stage forward. Elton and his piano were also moved closer and more to the centre.

Elton John and Tina Turner were scheduled to perform a millenium concert together. Tickets went on sale March 20. The full details are in this press release.
Various rumours about Elton John performing one or two special "millenium" concerts were circulated during 1999.
Rumour #1
One story has him performing a show in Australia and then one in Hawaii. The March 14 Sydney Sunday Telegraph explained why that won't happen:
A New year's eve concert to showcase Sydney to the world has been abandoned in favour of Victoria. Secret negotiations for the event starring superstars Elton John and John Farnham have been underway for 12 months. But the show has been cancelled - because it may have been too popular. Sydney Opera House Trust chief executive Michael Lynch said yesterday the concert would have closed off the Opera House to everyone but ticket holders.
Mr Wheatley said yesterday he was now negotiating to stage the event in Melbourne with Farnham as the headline act. "We are both incredibly disappointed," he said. "This was going to be history." Mr Wheatley said Elton John had pulled out of the concert six weeks ago because of delays in finalising the plans.
Rumour #2
Another story has him performing in Egypt in the shadow of the pyramids. This one was reported on CNN on January 27 1999. It included a quote from Elton John:
"I'm going this year - I'm going to play in Egypt. I've always wanted to - I love history. One is fascinated by the Egyptians, their lifestyle, what they've created. So yes the whole idea of this appeals to me. It's a very glamorised setting. The shape of the pyramid is very spiritual."Elton's management were also quoted, saying:
"There's is very serious grown up talk going on with very serious bidding. We don't want to say anymore than that at the moment."Rumour #3
In a March 3 radio interview, Elton said he would be playing somewhere in the eastern US.
Rumour #4
AP reports March 12 that Elton John and Tina Turner will play shows on December 30 and December 31 1999 at the Thomas & Mack Center, sponsored by Caesars Palace. Tickets from $100 to $600.
The March 15 press release by Caesars Palace makes this one the apparent winner. But there is still no word on December 31!
