I was fortunate enough to be at the Conan taping yesterday, and I thought I'd share some details about what went on off-camera, since you all know what happened on-camera.
First of all, yes, Elton did do the Rosie O'Donnell show yesterday. It was taped to be shown October 3. Joey Cola, her warmup guy, said it was an excellent appearance. Of course. Duh.
For the Conan taping, Elton and the band took the stage only a few minutes before they performed the first song. They all seemed in a good mood (although Elton did not seem his most comfortable during the interview, I thought). Davey began diddling around on his guitar, slowly breaking into Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, and the rest of the band joined in until they got a bit into the song and abruptly stopped. Darn. After Something About the Way You Look Tonight Elton chatted a bit with Conan and Andy, but I don't know what was said, and he took his seat and waited to come out of commercial.
You all heard the comments Elton made about being "hung like a horse" and then Tim Meadows' followup comment that they were comparing each other backstage. But then when Elton walked back out for Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting he had put a banana in his pants and was making a big show out of pointing out the bulge. The audience was dying laughing, and some lucky (?) girl got the banana after the show. Again, before the song Davey was messing around on his guitar playing something that sounded like the Beatles' Piggies! Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting rocked and Elton left fairly quickly after the song. It was a unique, wonderful experience.
